I've rebuild Quads before, but the last one was probably 20 years ago. I used to use Hygrade Jiffy Kit rebuild kits. Just make sure you clean everything thoroughly, blow out all the passages, and don't screw with the spring setting on the air valve on the secondaries.

I've rebuilt a few. Those rebuild kits look like overkill on the materials and cost but if the quality is good, why not.

It doesn't take a lot of special tools to rebuild the Q-jet. They are really quite simple devices. Did you look at that doug roe book?

I've done a few Carter AVS's.

True Dat spring setting. It is fun to fuck with after you get it running. Just not before.

My next door neighbor (and drinking buddy) is the head of the service department at the marina of a very large and well-to-due private club. He is literally an expert on the Quadrajet (which is evident when he starts talking about them) and says he has rebuilt hundreds over the years. He has about ten of them in his garage right now. Many late night and booze-fueled discussions have featured him extolling the virtues of the Q-jet over a Holley.

I'll see him tomorrow night and if he has any suggestions for you I will forward them on.

i've cleaned 'em, but never had to rebuild one. used to keep a spare around here somewhere, but i haven't seen it in years.

Thanks. It's a 1978 Pontiac Quadrajet off a 400ci engine. I can't find a rebuilt one (that I trust) within my budget so it looks like rebuilding one is the best way to go.

Even though I am no help whatsoever on your build, I strangely look forward to these posts. They are like an Oppo "thing" now.

I never have anything news worthy to post so I (rather selfishly) post my problems and hope oppo educates me on stuff.

On an unrelated topic, until now I didn't know your name was Automatch. I've always read it as Automach

Found a link to a article a guy did on his rebuild of a Q-jet for a '78 W72. http://bandittransamclub.com/smf/index.php?…

Which 400 was your Firebird born with, L78 or W72?

Surprise! It came from the factory with a turbocharged 301. I swapped in a 1973 (or '74 - can't remember) Pontiac 400 out of a 1974 2-barrel Catalina, threw in a more aggressive cam, later style 6x heads, and a factory 1978 4-barrel intake (the one that my qjet came off of). Cool story: I was given the heads, intake/carb combo for free from different sellers on craigslist.

Forgot you've talked about that before. I asked because I was wondering how it would have been jetted from the factory.

I would assume lean to pass emissions and economy standards but it is set up for my displacement so... yeah. I don't know. This is usually my DD so some fuel economy would be nice.

You may want to talk to lucky's neighbor about sending him the QJet and having him do it. Not knocking your ability in the least. There were many different forms of QJets over the years and they were used on many different engines. Someone who is an expert can spot funky issues right away, and probably get a good baseline tune on it so you won't be fighting it on installation. One of the reasons why QJets got a bad rep is because they aren't as easy to play around with.

JMHO.

My neighbor says any rebuild kit, like one from Napa (which is where he gets his), will do. But you'll need the number off the carb you have which should be 10758263. But he said the float will not come in the rebuild kit and YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT so order it separately. And keep the old gasket intact as much as possible when you disassemble it and match it with the new gasket. He says that's the biggest problem; the various holes in the gaskets not matching up.

He also said if you want it rebuilt, he's more than willing to. $150+shipping. But his words were "it ain't rocket science".

But when I told him you're putting a '78 carb on a '72 engine and that you wouldn't know the compression ratio and might not know the cam specs he rolled his eyes. He's said it's going to be tough to tune it right when you're setting it up for an unknown.

Thanks for asking! Spec sheet for the cam: http://www.compcams.com/v002/Pages/388… Compression is around 9.25:1 so just low enough I should be able to run 87 octane. I'm going to try and rebuild it, I'll see what the local parts stores have in terms of rebuild kits.

Kinja'd!!!0

If the heads are from a different engine then they are now on, how are you going to know the compression?

And maybe I wasn't clear on his point. If you set that carb up perfectly for it's original application by rebuilding it to stock specs (which he says anyone could do), the problem for a novice is going to be make it run perfectly on a on something other than that.

Kinja'd!!! Bandit > lucky's pepper

Yeah, that will be hard. My plan is that once I get the car painted, exhaust hung, and mostly finished, I will take it in and have a tune up done. The pontiac books say the heads I have give a stock 400 a 9.1:1 compression ratio.
